THOUGHTS FROM AN EMPTY NEST

by Donna (D.H. Parker)
Our children are so far from home, Lord--
Living among strangers in different cultures,
Living as aliens in foreign lands.
Hands I don't know are fixing their meals.
People I've never seen are giving them shelter.
We miss them.
I hope they aren't too homesick.
I hope those strangers feed them foods they
like,
And appreciate their sense of humor,
And take good care of them...
...But I rest myself in You.
You know every worry, every pang we feel.
You know what it is to have a child so far away.
You sent Your Son not across mere miles, but across
dimensions;
You watched Him go out of the infinite riches of eternity
Into the stifling poverty of time and space and matter;
Out of the glory and power of His heavenly form
Into the frightening, fragile body of a human infant.
You knew and He knew that He was going there to die.
Almighty, everlasting Father, thank You
For the gift of His coming,
For that unimaginable love You both had for us,
For the lessons in
parenting.
Our children are far from home, Lord,
But because of Your Child
We're still linked close in heart and soul and purpose.
While they're away, Father, please keep them close to You.
Grant them wisdom and strength and peace.
Make them loving and capable ambassadors for Christ.
And in our weakest moments of parental anxiety,
Remind us yet again
That we are all alien ambassadors on this earth.
Help us keep our focus on You.
Make each of us homesick for Heaven
And eternal reunion--
With our children and Yours.
